Getting ready before a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive heart procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve that fails to open properly (aortic valve stenosis).

Having any medical procedure can be both scary and overwhelming, but it is important to take the next step toward controlling your health.

TAVR may be an option if you are at intermediate or high risk of complications from surgical aortic valve replacement (open-heart surgery). TAVR can relieve the signs and symptoms of aortic valve stenosis

Before the TAVR procedure:

Your TAVR Doctor will provide information and specific instructions on preparing for your TAVR procedure. In addition to their instructions, there are a few things you might consider in the weeks and days leading up to the procedure.

  • If you exercise, ask your doctor what level of activity is appropriate.

  • Be sure you understood all the information about the medication you should or should not take

  • Eat Healthy, and make sure you know when you should stop eating or drinking prior to your procedure.

  • Be sure you have support. Depending on your recovery, you may stay a few days or longer in the hospital. Have friends and family drive you home and help with your daily activities at home.

During the Procedure:

Your interventional Cardiologist will perform the procedure at a hospital. Depending on your health, they will determine what type of anesthesia is best for you. You may be fully asleep, or you may be awake but given medication to help you relax and block pain.

Contrary to open-heart surgery, Your heart will not be stopped during the procedure. The procedure lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours

After The procedure:

Generally following a TAVR procedure, you may be taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) for a little while or moved directly to a recovery room. Your TAVR Doctor will update your caregiver or loved ones on how you are doing.

Ask your doctor, when your loved ones can see you after your recovery time.

Your doctor will give you specific instructions to help you with your TAVR procedure recovery, which may include a special diet, exercise, and medication. It is important to carefully follow your doctor’s directions, especially if blood-thinning drugs are prescribed.

The doctor will provide additional and more specific follow-up care instructions for you, which may include cardiac care rehabilitation. To ensure you are recovering as you should, you will have scheduled follow-up visits with either be with your TAVR Doctor or with your usual general cardiologist.

Full recovery time

This less invasive procedure, allows you to recover faster than open-heart surgery. It is different for everyone, but researches have shown that you can expect a reduction in symptoms within a few days, sometimes, immediately. You can expect a progressive and full return to your daily activities within 30 days.
